Portraits: past and present 1991 – 2024
This series of portraits includes artworks that were made over thirty years ago. Several were included in an exhibition titled Portraits in a Waiting Room in 2024 at Four Eight Four Presents. The series was made in response to people who visited my Carlton studio. A number of portraits from this exhibition were also displayed at Christine Abrahams Gallery in 1993 and one image was painted in 2024. Many of the portraits, recently rediscovered under my parents’ house, encapsulate memories of painting pictures in a room situated within a busy share house and its social life, which crept into my studio practice through portraiture. Portraiture is a social document that continues to provide me with an ongoing sense of social connectivity and joy.
